Free Random Name Picker for Teachers

Picking students fairly is harder than it sounds. You don't want to always call on the same eager hands, but you also don't want anyone to feel singled out. A random picker solves this—it's fair, it's fun, and it takes the pressure off both you and the students.

Why Use a Random Picker?

True Fairness: Every student has an equal chance. No unconscious bias, no favoritism accusations.

Engagement: The spinning wheel creates anticipation. Students actually want to be picked!

Saved Lists: Your class names are stored in the URL. Bookmark it once, use it all year.

Remove After Pick: Optionally remove picked names so everyone gets a turn before repeating.

How It Works

  1. Enter student names (one per line or paste from a spreadsheet)
  2. Click "Spin!"
  3. Watch the wheel spin and land on a random student
  4. Optionally enable "Remove after picking" for round-robin selection

Classroom Use Cases

Cold Calling

Make cold calling feel less intimidating. When a wheel picks someone, it's clearly random—not personal.

Group Presentations

Pick the presentation order randomly. Students can't complain about going first or last.

Prize Drawings

Doing a classroom reward? Spin the wheel to pick winners fairly.

Team Captains

Instead of popularity contests, let the wheel decide who picks teams.

Reading Aloud

Pick who reads the next paragraph. Keeps everyone following along since they might be next!

URL Sharing

The picker saves names in the URL:

/tools/picker?names=Alice,Bob,Charlie,Diana

Share this link with a co-teacher or bookmark it for quick access. Names persist without any account.

Embedding

Click "📎 Embed" to get an iframe code. Paste it into:

  • PowerPoint (Web version)
  • Google Slides
  • Moodle / Canvas
  • Notion
  • Any website

The embedded picker includes your saved names.

Privacy First

  • No accounts required
  • Names stored only in URL (client-side)
  • Nothing sent to servers
  • Works offline after loading

Tips for Teachers

  1. Update at semester: Paste your new roster, get a new URL
  2. Multiple classes: Bookmark different URLs for each class
  3. Absent students: Quick-remove them before spinning
  4. Fair rotation: Enable "Remove after picking" to ensure everyone participates
