Question Queue: Fair Classroom Participation

"Who has a question?" Suddenly, five hands shoot up, some students shout answers, and shy students shrink back. Sound familiar?

The Question Queue creates a fair, orderly system for classroom participation. Students join a virtual queue when they have a question, and you call on them in order. No more favoritism, no more chaos.

How It Works

For Teachers:

  1. Create a queue and get a 4-letter code
  2. Share the code with your class
  3. See students join in real-time
  4. Click "Call Next" to call on students
  5. Clear the queue when done

For Students:

  1. Go to the queue link or enter the code
  2. Type your name
  3. Choose "I have a question" or "Urgent!"
  4. Wait for your turn (position shown live)
  5. Get called when it's your turn

Why Use a Question Queue?

1. Fair Participation

Every student gets a turn based on when they joined—not who shouts loudest.

2. Shy Students Speak Up

Students who hate raising hands feel more comfortable joining a digital queue.

3. Reduces Interruptions

Students can join the queue silently without disrupting the lesson.

4. Tracks Participation

See who's asking questions and who might need encouragement.

5. Urgent Questions First

Real emergencies (bathroom, feeling sick) can be flagged as urgent.

Use Cases

During Lectures:
Keep teaching while students queue up. Check the queue during natural pauses.

Group Work:
Students can queue for help instead of raising hands and waiting.

Review Sessions:
Fair Q&A where everyone gets a chance to ask.

Office Hours:
Virtual or in-person, students join the queue when they arrive.

Tips for Success

Set Expectations:
Explain that joining the queue doesn't guarantee immediate attention—it's about fairness, not speed.

Check Regularly:
Glance at the queue every few minutes during independent work.

Clear Between Classes:
Use the "Clear Queue" button to start fresh each period.

Combine with Hand Raising:
For quick yes/no questions, hands are fine. Use the queue for longer questions.
